Josep Maria Garrell i Guiu

Dr. Josep M. Garrell i Guiu

Born in l’Espluga de Francolí, Conca de Barberà (1969). Dr. Josep M. Garrell is a computer engineer (UPC, 1992), doctor in electronics engineering (URL, 1995), and URL professor at La Salle HTS of Electronics Engineering and IT. In 1992, he was incorporated into La Salle-URL, where he cofounded the Intelligent Systems Investigation Group, and in 1994 obtained a supercomputation grant from the Catalonian Foundation for Research to use Carnegie Mellon University’s Supercomputation Center in Pittsburgh (USA). Starting in 1998 he took on various responsibilities in URL’s rector’s office: secretary of the Research Commission (1998-2002); delegate of the Rector for ICTs (2000-2002); vice-rector for Research and Innovation (2002-2010); Secretary General (2006-2010) and vice-rector for University Policy (2010-2012). During these years as vice-rector, it is worth highlighting his task of structuring the research activity of the university’s groups, propelling their growth and internationalisation. It is also worth to mention his leadership in the strategic direction of the Aristos Campus Mundus 2015 project, recognised as a Campus of International Excellence by the Ministry of Education and Science. In 2012, Dr. Garrell was appointed rector of the URL, a position he renewed in 2016 for a second term. From 2014 to 2018, Dr. Garrell was designated Advisor to the Parliament on Science and Technology (CAPCIT) on behalf of Catalan private non-profit universities. In May 2015, the General Assembly of the Conference of Spanish University Rectors (CRUE) appointed him member of its Permanent Committee and from January 2016 until mid-2019, he was its representative in the General Assembly and in the Council of the European University Association (EUA). In April 2019 Dr. Garrell was appointed member of the EUA Board for a period of 4 years.

Jordi Riera Romaní

Dr. Jordi Riera i Romaní

Jordi Riera Romaní is the Vice-Rector for Academic Policy and Deputy Rector of the Ramon Llull University (URL), Barcelona, Spain. He is also Professor of Education at Blanquerna Faculty of Psychology, Education Sciences and Sport-URL, Barcelona, Spain, where he works since 1990, and IP/Main Researcher of the Research Group on Pedagogy, Society and Innovation with ICT support (PSITIC). He holds a PhD in Education (Social Pedagogy), by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Barcelona, Spain. His areas of expertise are Social Pedagogy, Teaching Innovation, Quality and Social and Educational Leadership. Prior to his present position, Dr. Riera was Vice-rector for Academic Affairs, Teaching Innovation and Quality (2010-2012) and Vice-rector for Teaching and European Convergence (2007-2010) at URL. He also was Dean at Blanquerna Faculty of Psychology, Education Sciences and Sport-URL (1996-2004) and Director of the OTRI (Research Results Transfer Office)-Blanquerna Private Assistance and Service Foundation (FBAS) (2004-2007). He also has been President of the Catalan Association of Educators and the College of Educators of Catalonia (2002-2006), member of the Evaluation Council of the Catalan Education System (1998-2002) and member of the Council of Experts for Social Welfare of the Catalan Government (1997-2007). He has published several books and scientific articles in specialized magazines and press about educational issues.

Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation


Lluís Comellas Riera

Dr. Lluís Comellas Riera

Lluís Comellas Riera is the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of Ramon Llull University and Professor at IQS School of Engineering-URL, Barcelona, Spain. He is chemical engineer (1974) by IQS-URL and holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering (1978), by IQS-URL, Barcelona, Spain. Moreover, Lluís Comellas was dean of IQS School of Engineering-URL from 1998 to 2010. His teaching and research have focused on various aspects of analytical chemistry such as instrumental methods of analysis, food safety and environmental studies. In these areas he has published numerous scientific articles and he has directed and participated in several research and technology transfer projects with companies and public institutions. He is a member of several scientific and professional associations, such as the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), the Spanish Society of Chromatography and Allied Techniques (SECyTA) and the Association of Chemists and Engineers of IQS (AIQS).

Vice-Rector for International Relations and Students


Carlo Gallucci Calabrese

Dr. Carlo Maria Gallucci Calabrese

Born in Spezzano Albanese, Italy (1956). He holds a Bachelor degree in Economics and Commerce at Messina University (Italy), an MBA by ESADE-URL and a PhD in Economics and Business Sciences by Comillas Pontificia University ICADE-ICAI (Madrid). He also followed the Executive Program in Management at University of California, Los Angeles UCLA (USA) and the Strategic Marketing Management Program at Harvard Business School, Boston (USA). He is currently Professor of Marketing at ESADE-URL (Barcelona, Spain), where he works since1986 and where he has held various positions, and most particularly in the corporate department of international affairs. He is member of the ESADE International Advisory Board, to which he represents at the board of Creafutur. Since January 2013 he is part of the URL Rector’s Team as Vice-Rector for International Relations and Students.

Anna Berga Timoneda

Dra. Anna Berga i Timoneda

Anna Berga holds a BA in Political Science and Sociology and a PhD in Sociology from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She is associate professor at the Faculty of Social Education and Social Work Pere Tarrés, Ramon Llull University (URL). In this Faculty she has held several positions, including those of Director of the Master’s Degree Programs and Postgraduate Diplomas Area, Academic Director of the Master Degree in Prevention and Management of Risks within the Community (Ramon Llull University - UAB) and Director of the “Social Education” journal. She has been Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the UAB (2009-2010). Her fields of knowledge are adolescence and youth, social exclusion and gender studies; she has participated in various research projects and has published numerous scientific papers. She has formed part of several Boards, including the Advisory Council of the National Youth Plan (Catalan Government). Since 2010 she is member of the Rectoral Team of Ramon Llull University. She was Vice-rector for International Relations and Students from 2010 to 2012, and at present she is the General Secretary. She is also the actual President of the Women and Science Commission of the Catalan Interuniversity Council.
