P. Josep Oriol Cardús i Almeda

Father Josep Oriol Cardús i Almeda, S.J.  ()
(awarded on September 28th, 2004)

Born in Barcelona in 1914, he earned an undergraduate degree in Physics from Universitat de Barcelona. After pursuing further education in Literature, Philosophy, Theology and Science in different European countries, he was finally sent to the Ebro Observatory where he dedicated all his research activity for more than sixty years, dedicated primarily to geomagnetism. He participated in numerous national committees and eighteen international ones, including the IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics) Executive Committee. He also held numerous international and national executive posts in many organisations. This includes Secretary and later Vice President of IAGA (International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy), an association to which he was named an Honorary Member. He also organised and contributed to numerous symposia and congresses, including ten international events such as the World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map Committee. He has published over twenty-five scientific articles.
