José Narro

1. Dr. José Narro, Rector of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
(awarded on May 10th, 2011)

He earned his degree as Medical Surgeon from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and carried out postgraduate studies in Community Medicine at the University of Birmingham (England). In 2003 he was named Director of the UNAM’s School of Medicine, serving later as UNAM Rector from 2007 to 2011. Today, UNAM has more than 300,000 students and 36,000 faculty members, making it the largest university in Mexico and Latin America. In addition, UNAM’s main campus is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the public service area, Dr. Narro has made significant contributions to encourage social security protections and preventative medicine. He has received numerous national and international recognitions, including Eduardo Liceaga Award, a PhD honoris causa from Universidad Ricardo Palma in Peru and his naming as a Foreign Scholar within the Spanish National Royal Academy of Medicine.

Emilio Botín

2. Emilio Botín, President of Banco Santander

Emilio Botín is President of Banco Santander, a worldwide financial institution of reference, and someone who has always given great importance to higher education, assuming as his own the idea that the best investment for the future is investing in education. In accordance with this focus on talent and innovation, Banco Santander maintains a corporate strategy committed to supporting the improvement and internationalisation of higher education. Examples include projects such as Universia and the Miguel de Cervantes Online Library. Botín holds undergraduate degrees in Economics and Law and has been President of Banco Santander and the Fundación Marcelino Botín since 1986. Through these two institutions he carries out intense activity in the Spanish and Ibero-American university and scientific spheres.
