¡Welcome to Ramon Llull University!

Ramon Llull University (URL), located in Barcelona, is a private, not-for-profit university, with a Humanist and Christian inspiration, and promotes public service. Its main aim is to provide quality, personalised education to respond to society's needs.

Dr. Josep Maria Garrell i Guiu, rector of Ramon Llull UniversityURL comprises 11 higher education and research institutions with a long tradition and a prestigious reputation in Catalonia (IQS, Blanquerna, La Salle, Faculty of Philosophy, ESADE, Pere Tarrés Faculty of Social Education and Social Work, School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Sant Ignasi, Ebro Observatory University Institute, Vidal i Barraquer Mental Health University Institute, Borja Institute of Bioethics and ESDi Higher School of Design, an affiliated centre). It is one of the most innovative teaching institutions in Catalonia and in Spain as a whole, promoting academic and research excellence.

With its own methodology integrated within the European Higher Education Area, URL prepares future professionals using a comprehensive training programme in each of the areas of knowledge and promotes mastery of the new technologies using a methodology based on students applying their skills in small working groups and a close relationship between students and teaching staff.

Committed to first-order scientific research and its internationalisation, URL has internship agreements with more than 4,000 companies and institutions around the country and more than 200 agreements with international companies along with 630 agreements with universities around the world. This dedication to research and internationalisation is strengthened even further within the context of the Aristos Campus Mundus 2015 project which URL is carrying out jointly with Deusto and Comillas universities and recognised in 2011 as a Campus of International Excellence (CIE) by the Spanish Ministry of Education as part of its CIE Programme, quality seal that was renovated in 2013 and in 2014 and finally granted in December 2016.

It also provides its students with professional orientation and placement services. The latter serve as an efficient bridge between companies and students, allowing these quick access to the job market. We should also note that our alumni currently work in more than 100 countries through 350 international companies that have hired URL graduates to work abroad.

Welcome to Ramon Llull University!

Dr. Josep M. Garrell i Guiu
Rector

Primary traits of the ECTS credit system

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) serves to accumulate and transfer student-centred credits based on the transparency of results and learning processes. Its aim is to facilitate planning, obtaining, assessing, recognising and validating degrees and learning units as well as encourage student mobility. This system is used widely in higher education and can be applied to other life-long learning activities.

ECTS credits

ECTS credits are based on the workload required for students to achieve the expected learning results.

These learning results encompass what students are expected to know, understand and be able to do upon successfully completing the learning process. The credits are linked to academic descriptors within national and European qualification frameworks.

The workload indicates the actual time students need to complete all the required learning activities (classes, seminars, projects, practical exercises, independent work and exams) and achieve the expected learning results.

60 ECTS credits are assigned to the workload for one year of formal learning (an academic year) and the learning results obtained in this time. In most cases, students’ workloads range from 1,500 to 1,800 hours total per academic year. A single credit is equivalent to 25 to 30 hours of work.

ECTS credit use

Credits are assigned to degrees or programmes in their entirety as well as to their specific academic components (such as modules, classes or the units the degree consists of, reports or dissertations, internships and laboratory work). The number of credits assigned to each component is based on its weight, that is, on the workload implied for students to achieve the specific learning results in a formal context.

Credits are given to individual students (whether full or part time) after completing the learning activities required for a formal programme or a single academic component and being assessed as competent in terms of the learning results achieved. Credits can be accumulated to obtain degrees if so decided by the institution granting that degree. If students have obtained learning results in other contexts or through different learning experiences (formal or informal), credits can be assigned after their assessment, validation or favourable recognition of these learning results.

The credits granted in a given programme may be transferred to another programme offer by the same institution or another one. This transferal is only possible if the institution granting the degree recognises the corresponding credits and learning results. The associated institutions must first agree on recognising credits for study abroad periods.

Using the main ECTS documents (degree guide, admissions application, learning contract and academic certification) and the European supplement for degrees helps transfer and accumulate credits.

For further information, consult the ECTS Users' Guide.
