This is a university institute fully dedicated to scientific research. It is a Coordinated Centre of the Higher Council of Scientific Research and has cooperation agreements with the DURSI (Department of Universities, Research and the Information Society) and various departments of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government), the National Geographic Institute and the National Meteorology Institute, among others. It is structured into four sections: geomagnetism, ionosphere, seismology, and meteorology, climate and solar activity. It teaches a Doctorate programme in geophysics, an Inter-University masters with the UB in the same subject and different single-subject courses.
