Presentation
On 1 March 2001 it was made public that the Ramon Llull University
had been awarded the UNESCO Chair in Education, Development,
Technology and Systems of Finance in Latin America.
On 29 August 2001, the then rector of the Ramon Llull University, Dr. Miquel Gassiot,
and the director general of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura,
signed the agreement creating the UNESCO Chair for Education,
Technology and Systems of Finance in Latin America
Finally, on 10 January 2002, the UNESCO Chair was presented
publicly in an event that took place at the headquarters of
the Trust and Rectory of the URL (C. Claravall, 1-3) and was
presided over by the then president of the Catalan Regional
Government, the Honourable Mr. Jordi Pujol.
On 20 March 2003, the rector of the URL, Esther Giménez- Salinas, assumed the presidency of the UNESCO Chair, and vicerector for Students and International Relations of the URL, assumed the direction of the UNESCO Chair.
On 29 August 2009 the UNESCO Chair changed its name into UNESCO - URL Chair in Education, Development and Technology.
Aim
The Chair is intended for the institutionalisation and fostering
of an integrated system of activities in research, training,
information and documentation of Education, development, technology
and financing systems between the centres of the URL and Latin
America.
These activities involve training, research and dissemination
of results and their objective is to study the different fields
(educational, technological and economic) that will contribute
to human development and, in the long run, strengthen relations
with Latin America through the creation of a joint working
platform and foster the appearance of other institutions for
the study of new projects.
In addition, the Chair, which facilitates cooperation between
high level internationally well-known researchers and lecturers
from the University and the other higher educational institutions
of Latin America, is pushing forward a series of ideas on
the conditions, possibilities and opportunities of this development
and is taking different actions to foster these. With this
aim in mind, it organises seminars, lectures, debates and
meetings. It is setting up a network of universities, companies
and institutions centred on these activities and committed
to this particular form of development that are interested
in training teams of individuals with a strong intellectual,
professional and ethical training.
